[tlug] SuSE 10

Hi All

I'm a bit reluctant to post this because compared to all of you, I am a
complete novice
with Japanese on Linux. That said however, I just installed SuSE 10 on
one of my
laptops and so far my impression is very positive.

I did just the basic english install, then selected language japanese,
experienced user,
KDE educational and games, multimedia, and to be honest, I don't know
what all else.

Anyway, things seem to work exceedingly well. The IME comes up without
any special
environmental settings, and is something called SKIM. Shift Space
brings up the IME
as one would expect. The IME has two icons -- a keyboard and a wrench.
I right
clicked on the keyboard icon and selected Japanese/Canna and everything
seems
to be working. There were about 12 other selections under Japanese for the
input besides Canna, but I don't know any of them so stuck with Canna.

I just checked and using an mlterm, the LANG variable is set to en_US.UTF-8.

I don't know enough Japanese to really exercise the dictionaries, but
all the basic
stuff I know worked. I tried things like watashi, kyou, konban,
konnichi, tsutsumi,
kodutsumi and all translated to Kanji with no problems. It has
OpenOffice 2.0
and that's what I did most of the testing in.

Also, this is the first out-of-the-box install I've done where the
hibrenate worked
on my laptop, which is a 2 year old HP ze4430us.

I followed the SuSE 9.3 thread about 6 months ago and had also installed
it on this same
laptop. After all the problems discussed on the list, and lacking time
to do anything
anyway, I never went any further after the install. My other systems
had 8something
and 9.2 and were working fine. It looks like maybe they have UTF-8
pretty well
integrated in this time.
