KAKASI is the language processing filter to convert Kanji characters
to Hiragana, Katakana or Romaji(1) and may be helpful to read
Japanese documents.

As far as dictionaries, the main online dictionary I use is ALC's
????????? (???????????????) -

I like it because, along with definitions, it gives many usages
examples. And when you use it as an English-to-Japanese
dictionary, it gives kana readings for the kanji in the definition.
However, it doesn't give you kana when you use it as a Japanese- 
to-English dictionary.

For looking up kanji readings, I've been using Jim Breen's xjdic,
and that works great because the EDICT format always includes kana
readings. But I've seen some proprietary MS Windows apps that make
it even easier to look up readings. One is called Babylon and the
other is called KanjiPop. To use them, all you do is select a word
and then right-click on it or something to get a popup shows the
kanji reading and definition.

I'm wondering if anybody is aware of something similar for Linux.

Yeah, I know I'm lazy.
