Why are we discussing GIF when even Exploiter can do PNGs?

Anyway, the obvious solution is to teach the browsers to use the
Xrender extension and use a slightly more advanced notion of color.
(I don't think that's what the spammers mean when they tell me I need
"alpha", but one can always hope!)
