I think you meant the PM-A700.
First, i have no idea what you mean by it being English unfriendly, so i
just won't go there. But a quick google search shows that someone got it
working on linux http://www.le.chiba-u.ac.jp/~aoyama/linux/pm-a700/

This guy says he got the drivers from
http://www.epkowa.co.jp/linux/index.html

but i had a quick look there and can't see this model listed....
it looks like he downloaded a file called pipsa700-cups-2.6.2-2.i386.rpm
which i googled for but nothing turned except the first site.
Anyway... the whole install on debian looks like a right pain and he
says you need to be root to use it.. that coupled with fedora core would
most certainly turn someone off linux for life .

I have a pixus 560i working on gentoo just fine, although it only has
one resolution, i think it is a great printer for 14000yen

Greg Thomson was probably on the mark when he said to get a hp printer
they are all supported, the only reason i didn't buy one is because none
of them let you print on cds.(I read somewhere that no printers made or
sold in the land of the free will let you print to cds.)

Basically, i think you need to do a little more homework... google
around, check out canon's and epson's site for list of supported
printers. You can also check out the turbolinux forums and see what
other japanese are using.
There is also turboprint
http://www.turboprint.de/english.html
