[tlug] ATI Fire GL X1 - 3D acceleratio

Hello everyone :)

I have Dell Precision workstation with Ati Fire GL X1 graphics card
(technical description of the mashine see eg.
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/precn_650?c=us&l=en&s=dfh&~page=1&~tab=specstab#tabtop
)

I have debian stable on this mashine and I come to the idea, that it
would be nice to try 3D acceleration. Unfortunately, I am new to this
since so far I was happy with xterm or console :) thus I experience some
dificulties...

Anyway here is what I have done:

I compiled new kernel 2.4.26 and folowing
http://www.rage3d.com/content/articles/atilinuxhowto/
I have these options set:
CONFIG_MTRR=y
CONFIG_AGP=y
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=y
# CONFIG_AGP_I810 is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_VIA is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_AMD is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_AMD_K8 is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_SIS is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_ALI is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_SWORKS is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_NVIDIA is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_ATI is not set
# Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 DRI support)
#
# CONFIG_DRM is not set
# CONFIG_MWAVE is not set
# CONFIG_OBMOUSE is not set

The kernel kompiled smoothly and I booted without problems.

After that I downloaded driver from www.ati.com:
fglrx-4.1.0-3.9.0.i386.rpm
and installed it using "alien".

After that:
$cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/
$sh make.sh
$cd ..
$pwd
/lib/modules/fglrx
$sh make_install.sh

so far no problem.

Than I used fglrxconfig to generate XF86Config-4
Since http://www.rage3d.com/content/articles/atilinuxhowto/
has two posibilities about AGP, I tried
 Option "UseInternalAGPGART"         "no"
 as well as "yes". It does not change the behavior which I describe
 below.

Than I started X and have this result:

#fglrxinfo
display: :0.0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: VA Linux Systems, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 Mesa 3.4.2

# glxgears
643 frames in 5.0 seconds = 128.600 FPS
600 frames in 6.0 seconds = 100.000 FPS
600 frames in 5.0 seconds = 120.000 FPS
600 frames in 5.0 seconds = 120.000 FPS
600 frames in 5.0 seconds = 120.000 FPS
480 frames in 5.0 seconds = 96.000 FPS
600 frames in 5.0 seconds = 120.000 FPS

BUT:

# fgl_glxgears
Error: couldn't get fbconfig

AND in /var/log/XFree86.0.log:
...
(II) fglrx(0): detected XFree86 version: 4.1.0
(II) Loading extension ATIFGLRXDRI
(II) fglrx(0): doing DRIScreenInit
[drm] failed to load kernel module "fglrx"
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] drmOpen failed
(EE) fglrx(0): DRIScreenInit failed!
(WW) fglrx(0): ***********************************************
(WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed!                  *
(WW) fglrx(0): * (maybe driver kernel module missing or bad) *
(WW) fglrx(0): * 2D acceleraton available (MMIO)             *
(WW) fglrx(0): * no 3D acceleration available                *
(WW) fglrx(0): ********************************************* *
...

I thought framebuffer might be involved, so I add this info:
in kernel:

CONFIG_FB=y
CONFIG_FB_VESA=y
CONFIG_FB_VGA16=m
CONFIG_FB_ATY128=m
CONFIG_FBCON_CFB8=y
CONFIG_FBCON_CFB16=y
CONFIG_FBCON_CFB24=y
CONFIG_FBCON_CFB32=y
CONFIG_FBCON_VGA_PLANES=m

# lsmod |grep fb
vga16fb                 8736  63
fbcon-vga-planes        3104   0  [vga16fb]

But removing these two modules does not change anything about the

# fgl_glxgears
Error: couldn't get fbconfig

problem.

Can anyone please advice me what I am doing wrong?
I am not skilled enough to know exactly where to look for relevant info
about the 3D acceleration issues, so I might missed something. I would
happily provide anyone who asks with more info. I have tried google of
course, but I could not find any coherent result.
I attach XFree86.0.log and XF86Config-4.

Btw. the link for policy from
http://www.tlug.jp/list.html
is bad.

Best regards
Michal
