Sometimes, this will happen if you just type something in the term
window, but will work if, for example, you create a document with vi.

As for aterm itself, it does seem as if the patch at wakaba.com has
disappeared.  Take a look at the two pages mentioned above.  Then, you
can go back to my Japanese in *nix page at
http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/jpninpt.html 

and follow the
instructions for building aterm from source--get the tarball from
sourceforge (the link is on the Japanese input page).  Note that you
will have to do bunzip2 the patch from my page first.  

Before doing this, remove the SuSE rpm so that you don't run into
conflicts.  rpm -e aterm-<version>
