How do the TLUG finances look these days?  If no one else comes
up with help for him, maybe TLUG could buy a decent used notebook,
throw the distro of his choice on it, and lend it to him while he's
in Japan.

When he leaves, we get it back and sell it either at a TLUG auction 
(with a fair minimum bid) or sell it back to a used shop such as
Sofmap and eat the difference.

What do you all think?
