Just as I suspected.

Logging out of then back in to X did the trick.

Here was my mistake...

./configure --prefix=/home/current_user/dev/aspell-0.50.5 && make

breaking that into two lines did the trick in terms of building, but I can  
not say as to why the terminal got hungry for kimchee.  Can't say I blame  
it though.
