Compared to what? :-p  The only (IMO) decent kanji engine for Linux
and BSD is Atok X (do they still sell that?  I've been away from
Japan over a year and a half and I've become really out of touch).
I hope it's still available, since using Atok is a pleasure.
It's quality is as good as what you get on Win or Mac.  It's
the only *nix kanji engine I ever used in which I could type my
address (Kanagawa-ken Kawasaki-shi Shukugawara) and have it
render it correctly the first time.  With all the others, I had
to pick out each character of Shukugwara indvidually.

Atok is neither Free nor free, but once in a blue moon the best 
solution is a proprietary one.
