Just speculating here, but I suspect the (first?) trick here is to configure and enable the PCMCIA NIC card.  Unless there is support built into the notebook's BIOS, I would think that one usually needs to boot a minimal OS with PCMCIA drivers from a floppy, for example, to get things started.  From what kinds of media can the machine boot?
