[tlug] TLUG, not TLPG

February 21st, 2004

Re: "Just curious, Lyle, but by the above, do you mean that you are
"migrating" over to Linux for *home* use? Or, are you saying that you
will soon be using only Linux *at work*?"

Somewhere in-between those two. I depend on having a machine that I can
both write with and stuff text into the wires with, and I've been
experiencing problems with external probing affecting the three W2K
boxes I and others in my "home office" are using. (I also have an
assortment of ugly beige boxes, including W95, W98j, W98e, W2Kj, W2Ke,
RH Linux & Suse Linux... and one ancient Mac that I bought for Y1,000)
Strictly going by usability and support for the applications that I
depend on, I don't actually mind W2K so much, but the lack of security
for whatever reason - whether due to EvilEpire boxes being targets or
just being faulty programs in the first place, makes it nerve-wracking
to use them. As I say, I depend on these machines for my livelihood.
It seems to me that Linux is a more secure way to pull information out
of the wires and to stuff text back into them... that, combined with the
desire to escape from having to use EvilEmpire products, makes me like
Linux. Not to mention that I read and liked Linus Torvalds book. The
thuggish behavior of Emperor Bill with his "illegal" messages when his
bloody software fails are so infuriating, that there is a certain peace
of mind and happiness to writing on a machine with no EvilEmpire
software in it. Even though... as I write this, I'm thinking "I've got
to find a decent text editor in Linux... I can't be writing only with
OpnOf Writer...".

I know there are several good text editors for Linux - can someone point
out one... say Bluefish maybe? I remember someone recommending that one
before but I can't find it in any of the menus, although I suspect it
must be in one of the six or seven disks that came with my boxed set of
Suse Linux 9.0.

I do apologize for not being a programmer, but I figured that since this
is TLUG and not TLPG, it might be alright to ask strictly user-related
questions... "users" is part of the TLUG name after all....

Lyle

PS I put Linux on a couple of computers at a couple of the offices I
formerly worked at... and positively terrified the inept (even more so
than myself) IT people at both places....
