Start a gnome-terminal from a utf8 locale:
$ LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8 gnome-terminal --disable-factory
Then select your favourite input method (xim module with kinput2 or im-ja).
I have a custom xmodmap so that I can input accented letters with the right alt key and both of the mentioned input methods will accept these characters even in kanji mode.

HTH.
