A quick search through FreeBSD's ports indicate that there is a Japanese
font pack that should work with acroread.  (TOTALLY UNTESTED!!!) 

Just mentioning it as something to look for.  There might be a font pack
that has to be installed--I don't recollect what flavor of Linux you're
using, so don't know if it's easily accessible or not.
