It won't, until you start a new Kmail or log out and log back in.

Less than optimal, but maybe that's difficult to work around or
it wouldn't be that way?  Don't know.

I also appreciate the value of having an input method for one's
non-native language while keeping the menus in one's native language,
although for me the issue is usually one of English and Vietnamese
these days, rather than one of English and Japanese.
