Yeah, Unicode is pretty good. At the place where I 
work, we use Unicode for the most web applications
we have here. Don't think we ever had an issue with
not having enough kanji chars.

It makes life a lot easier as you don't have to think
about switching/converting encodings.

But you want to be careful not to use Unicode in
e-mails if you are to have mail distribution function
in your web app. Some mail clients can't handle
it well. For Japanese mail, JIS (ISO-2022-JP) is
the standard (bad idea to use sjis or euc).
