That's sort of how I got into it, except it was more driven by 
necessity.  In my previous admin job, I had to handle
thousands of mails daily (postmaster was one of my aliases, and
I worked at an ISP), and mutt does this not only very well, it does
that very quickly.  I don't know if any of the GUI mail clients
could handle that well or not.  Before mutt I used pine, and it
couldn't.
