There is not as of yet an RFC, but rather a series of drafts[1]. B0ti is
right, the version string must be correct for SSH to work (though OpenSSH's
ssh client can ignore the version string altogether, AFAIK). What you can
do is change the server name. Edit version.h in the OpenSSH source and
recompile. Then you can have something like me:

: jmglov@example.com; telnet www 22
Trying 128.239.5.11...
Connected to www.incogen.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
SSH-2.0-Wouldntyouliketoknow_2.7
