Well, I am neither Ryan nor Scott, but I know that the usual way to build an
app with Japanese support in Gentoo is to make sure "cjk" is in your USE
flags.

Try something as simple as:

USE="cjk" emerge sylpheed

Hopefully that will do what you want. If it does not, I would recommend
searching the Gentoo Forums (forums.gentoo.org) for "sylpheed AND
japanese" or something like that. The Forums are usually a damned fine
resource.
