As a French one, Spanish looks more similar than Italian to my native
language (this is totally subjective!).

Googlelling a little gave me this link which looks interesting (follow
the link at the bottom of the page to have more information) and states
also that Italian is closest to French (I am always wrong!).

PS. But of course, the guy is totally wrong when he says that Italian is
"Probably the most beautiful spoken language" ;-)

PPS. And I think also that the initial question (Spanish branched from
Latin earlier than Italian) is not incompatible with the following
mails, including mine.
Being "quite different" (sic) still could make one language to be one of
the nearest to another one. Spanish is obviously  not very far from
French and Italian. English or German are very different from these
three.
French has some Celtic roots for instance (and others), but the main are
Latin.
