[tlug] processing passwd

Evening,

Could any recommend me a solution (or a program) that can set/get the
fields from a specified file which is in the passwd(5) format.
chfn can only work with /etc/passwd.
I want to store the users' email in the User name & comment field and
then retrieve it automagically if needed.
Currently I'm doing it with sed and it can set the thing correctly, but
is quite a hack.
I'm sure perl can do it too (but I don't speak it...).
