Mr. Oda's page is a bit dated.  It should, theoretically at least, be
much easier now than it was then.

For RedHat 7.2 you'll probably find it easiest to just use canna and
kinput2, both on the CD's. I have a page that goes into it in a bit more
detail at http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/jpninpt.html

(Or, if you want to be daring, try the vanilla tarball linked at the
bottom of the page--I need guinea pigs.)  :)

I realize I haven't answered your exact question, but (hopefully) I'm
giving you an easier and quicker way to get Japanese going.
