REALLY?  I'll have to give that a try.  I don't think I've ever been able to get things working quite right UNLESS I've set XMODIFIERS prior to starting kinput2.  Then again, I'm really not exactly sure what the heck I'm doing when it comes to Japanese input.  Only until recently have I found good docs explaining how this works (links from TLUG I think).
