Be sure to set your XMODIFIERS variable before you run kinput2 (example XMODIFIERS="@example.com=kinput2"; export XMODIFIERS).

If you're starting X via xdm, kdm, etc., you may have to put these in your .xsession vice your .xinitrc (distribution dependant).  Just a thought.
