Technically all compression algorithms do not need to know all the data
beforehand. (Except non-adaptive algorithms)
Basically you use the information you gathered on the already compressed
data to compress the incoming new data.
However archivers that support multiple algorithms will try all to find
the one that works best. gzip implements only one algorithm and so does
not need to know all the data.
