I'm not following you. Maybe yu are confused between MAC addresses (layer 2) 
and IP addresses (layer 3)?

If your machine knows that a packet is for a machineon anothernetwork, it 
addresses the packet for the default gateway (addressing it at both the 
layer 2 and layer 3 levels). Your machine puts the MAC address of the 
default gateway into the ethernet packet destination address.

All the switch does is check which MAC address a packet is destined for 
(layer 2). It does not check the IP address the packet is for (layer 3).

The switch has no default gateway information at all.

Your machine on the other hand does ... that's why it was able to put the 
MAC address of the default gateway into the packet in the first place ;)
