Retail pr0n? :-)

Beggars can't be choosers :-)

You can get them two ways. One way is from whois:

whois -h whois.nic.ad.jp av-navi.co.jp/e

[whois.nic.ad.jp]

Domain Information:
p. [Name Server] ns.gps.co.jp
p. [Name Server] rent.gps.co.jp

Lots of info snipped, the relevant part is that those are the
authoritative name servers for av-navi.co.jp.

rent.gps.co.jp: 202.229.69.4
ns.gps.co.jp: 202.229.69.6

Or with dig:

dig www.av-navi.co.jp

; <<>> DiG 9.2.0 <<>> www.av-navi.co.jp
;; global options: printcmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 26181
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 2, ADDITIONAL: 2

;; QUESTION SECTION:
;www.av-navi.co.jp. IN	A

;; ANSWER SECTION:
www.av-navi.co.jp.	37853	IN	A	202.229.69.8

;; AUTHORITY SECTION:
av-navi.co.jp. 2997	IN	NS	ns.gps.co.jp.
av-navi.co.jp. 2997	IN	NS	rent.gps.co.jp.

;; ADDITIONAL SECTION:
ns.gps.co.jp. 81053	IN	A	202.229.69.6
rent.gps.co.jp. 81053	IN	A	202.229.69.4

The authority section lists the name servers, the additional
section lists the IP addresses of same.

From your other post:

ISDN:
-----

$cat /etc/resolv.conf

domain gps.co.jp
nameserver 192.168.200.1
nameserver 202.229.69.6
search gps.co.jp

DHCP is giving you that, or did you set it up yourself?

That should always work, b/c 202.229.69.6 has the correct information
for av-navi.co.jp.

ADSL:
-----

$cat /etc/resolv.conf

nameserver 192.168.254.254
search localdomain

Seems that for DSL I am using the DSL router as a nameserver ... don't know
if that is good or bad though.

It'll work. If the DSL router is down, it doesn't matter if you can
resolve anything on the outside or not :-)

Interestingly, let's look at 202.229.69.4 now:

dig @example.com www.av-navi.co.jp

; <<>> DiG 9.2.0 <<>> @example.com www.av-navi.co.jp
;; global options: printcmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: SERVFAIL, id: 37009
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0

;; QUESTION SECTION:
;www.av-navi.co.jp. IN	A

;; Query time: 558 msec

;; WHEN: Thu Jul 11 18:52:04 2002
;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 35

It has rejoined the living but is not being helpful.

Best guess, since you say the problem disappeared: both of their
name servers were either down/offline or were serving up
bad/no information. They fixed 69.6 but 69.4 is still
having issues.

Might I recommend a better hosting service to your friend? :-)
