huh?
why need the machines be identical to share /usr and /opt?
they need to have the same cpu architecture, but that's it.
there is no machine specific configuration in those directories,
only binaries and data which are identical across all machines
using the same distribution.

the whole point of /usr nowadays is to make it sharable.
if i can't share /usr, then i can't share anything.

/var is less sharable than /usr, 
/usr/local is debatable (it's either as sharable as /usr, or less
but not more) that leaves /home.
/etc is another difficoult case because of its machinespecific
(even with identical hardware) configuration.
