 No.  Think, how to delete a multi-byte character, how many times do you 
want to type Backspace?  Think, cursor movement of mutli-column character,
how many times do you want to type CursorKey to forward cursor?
Thata kind of things..

 Try to input and edit UTF-8 characters(except ASCII, of course :-p)
on your shell, you'll see the problems ;-).
