A lack of support in the kernel seems an extremely unlikely source, 
as any kernel that did not support the filesystem would not know what
ext3 was in the first place.  You should have seen something like
"ERROR: ext3 not supported by kernel".  

  But your error was (sorry, I purged my tlug box so I can't quote) 
something like: "EXT3: Error jounal not found".  This indicates that 
the kernel knew exactly what kind of filesystem it was, but couldn't 
find the file containing the journaling information or just couldn't 
read the filesystem at all.  ie Hardware or filesystem issue, not kernel.
