That will happen when the batteries get low.  They can also be influenced by
strong RF interference (what was he close to?) and probably strong solar
flare activity.  Also, the instructions say to not set the transceiver unit
on metal surfaces (I use to sometimes have spurious problems before I noticed
that in the booklet).  Since then, I started always setting it on top of
a book or mouse pad (I usually perch it on top of the tower case) and 
no problems at all.

Ditto for my Logitech ones; I've never cleaned either, and they just keep
on ticking.
