I bet he was near another person who had one.  I ran into that problem 
when a colleague of mine got one (my solution was to make him move to
the other end of the office :-)  The Windows drivers allow you to select
which of four channels to operate on, but there is no way to do that
in Linux.  The weird part is that the effect didn't go in both directions, only
one: my mouse/keyboard did not step on his, but his stepped on mine.  The
really weird thing is that I duplicated the effect with two different 
ones and in both cases, mine got stomped on.

I have only one at home, so I can't test it there, but I suspect that 
maybe the set I have here at work is buggy.  It is a fairly old one,
I've had it about 2 years now.

They're quite well-made, really.  Nothing has ever broken on this, or
any Logitech mouse I've ever had, either.  MS Natural Keyboards are pretty
good too, but I just refuse to buy one because they're made by MS.
It's funny that MS makes such shoddy software, but when they go into
the hardware business, they come out with first-rate mice, keyboards, and
joysticks.  Go figure.
