To be honest, I don't have the exact model number, it's a no-name brand I
bought at Fry's Electronics (a huge retailer in the states).  It's a Kaiser
based on the S3 chipset 4 meg.  but I'll have to open the box to get the
exact model number.  I also have a Viper V770 lying around here somewhere I
can use.

checking now... But I have to admit to being a little confused by the
xf86config file.  I see that it lists all the possible video modes, but I'm
not clear on how it stores information on which mode to boot to?

nope, 7.  I downloaded it last year, just haven't used it until now.  too
many other computer projects.

By the way, this is a client computer hanging off a win2k network.  Thanks
to Alberto, I've been able to get it so it can see the internet (one of the
win2k boxes is the NAT).  Once I get this video problem solved, I'll need to
setup file and print sharing on a windows network.
