I usually use 'record' by Gerd Knorr <kraxel@example.com>
for recording from a radio or tape source. On SuSE Linux,
'record' is in v4l-tools.rpm. 'record' is a simple
program running in a terminal but it worked well for me.
I didn't have the problem you describe.

My computer at home, where I use 'record', is a 300 MHz
Pentium II with IDE disks.
