Try invoking kterm with the option "-xim" or hold down ctrl,
press and hold the middle mouse button and look for a menu-entry
called "Open Input Method".

Do you have the XMODIFIERS env set ?
(e.g. XMODIFIERS="@example.com=kinput2")
