Re: boot error

How do we troubleshoot it in that environment where no Linux does work?  Is Windows helpful?

errr..
I said boot disk not rescue disk.
also
>panic : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on 03:01
you usually got that error when your "/" partition location has changed (location is different from lilo)
in lilo.conf there is a line which says "root=/dev/hda1" ( the "hd??" part  could be different in your case)
which tell the kernel where your "/" is.

so in your case I think 3 thing could have happened
1.) Your rescue disk is incorrect
2.) Your partition table has been changed
3.) Your disk might be corrupted

It will really help us to help you if you can tell us exactly what happen and what did you do
also what is your linux knowledge level

Every rescue floppy I have says:
===============================================
Loading  ...........................................................................................

(All lines omitted)

Kernel panic : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on 03:01
===============================================
So, it gives me no help.  It seems a problem about file systems.  My HD was FAT32-FDISKed and then incidentally FAT16-FDISKed after Windows was deleted.  Even I tried an old bootable CD-ROM of Slackware 3.6 and its boot floppies I was familier with.

Again, my purpose is simply to boot Linux normally from a CD-ROM.  Give me chips of help.

Thanks for some quick responses, but I'm trying the 1st time setup, using a bootable CD-ROM.  It's weird to me.

I'm perplexed in the error shown below.  What's going on?  Please inform me of how to get rid of this trouble.  Or, tell me which document I should take a look at.  Thank you.

==============================================
LILO

(omitted)

boot :
Loading Linux  ..................
Uncompressing Linux  ...

crc error

   -- System halted
==============================================
