Good guess. It's what a laptop maker would call a jp106: 106 keys (plus
the "Microsoft key", uggh) fudged via an "Fn" key from a lot fewer
actual keys.

I think I did. But I was never asked what kind of video card I had; I
was instead *told* that it was "Trident TGUI9660 (generic)" with no
chance of correcting this. (It may be correct, for all I know). Still,
it has correctly determined that I have a Trident 9382.

I followed the instructions. I actually heard a buzz from the FDD that
was long enough to write a little file.  No error message.

Removed the diskette and brought it over here. Empty.

Went back to the Linux machine. Screen full of errors. It seems that it
had tried to write to the diskette after I'd pulled out the diskette.
Whoops.

Strange, since I told it that I had a 3-button generic mouse. But I
don't suppose that this is a big issue.  Surely the crux is the bit
about "No valid modes found."

I don't know what "Deleted" means here. During installation, I was asked
which one of a total of perhaps ten combinations of
resolution/colordepth I wanted. I only chose a single one: 800x600.

Well, 2^16 colors. (The screen doesn't support 24-bit, though the video
card does.) Presumably that's the meaning of one of the "16"s; I don't
know the meaning of the other or of the "565".

I can't see any point in my attempting to edit the file -- whether by
pico, vi, or something else -- until I know how I should edit it.
http://www.fmworld.net/product/former/bi9706/nu/spec.html says that the
horizontal refresh rate is 37.8 kHz. That's the info I gave to the
installation catechism.  Does

mean that I would have to specify 48.08 (or above)?  If so, I'm very
surprised, since a week ago the old clunker was capable of displaying
Windows via SVGA perfectly well. But OK, I could use regular VGA (ugh).
Or should I regard xfree86.org as more knowledgable/credible about this
screen than Fujitsu itself?
