I agree. I find that most packages that I really use, I end up 
building from source. That way I get control over the configuration
options/locations and can keep up to date with the latest stuff.
And I avoid scratching my head over wierd customization/configuration
the distribution people do (e.g., spreading things between /etc,
/usr, ...).
