No luck. Before connecting from palm, I run 

# /usr/sbin/pppd /dev/pilot 57600 172.16.254.33:172.16.254.34 proxyarp silent persist local noauth linkname palm  

172.16.254.33 is linux box IP, 172.16.254.34 -- the one of palm
