   As I've suggested directly, I think if you're local anyway it makes sense 
to write a generic x-windows app, rather than an html filter. If you do 
stick with an html filter, you might be interested in using netscape's 
remote control stuff. netscape --help produces:

-remote <remote-command>  to execute a command in an already-running
                          Netscape process.  For more info, see
                  http://home.netscape.com/newsref/std/x-remote.html

  My old prof Udi Manber (agrep fellow) used to use this all the time for 
these types of filters, so I know it works. You can tell a running netscape 
to save the file to disk, run your filter on it, and tell netscape to open 
the results file. Much simpler than a proxy.
  Still, having a little window which polls the x-selection (if there's no 
better way) should do the trick, no?
