A basic set of Japanese fonts is already part of the standard
X-distribution. They are in the directory /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc:

    mfabian@example.com:~$ grep jis /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.dir
    12x24rk.pcf.gz -sony-fixed-medium-r-normal--24-170-100-100-c-120-jisx0201.1976-0
    8x16rk.pcf.gz -sony-fixed-medium-r-normal--16-120-100-100-c-80-jisx0201.1976-0
    jiskan24.pcf.gz -jis-fixed-medium-r-normal--24-230-75-75-c-240-jisx0208.1983-0
    jiskan16.pcf.gz -jis-fixed-medium-r-normal--16-150-75-75-c-160-jisx0208.1983-0
    k14.pcf.gz -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--14-130-75-75-c-140-jisx0208.1983-0
    7x14-JISX0201.1976-0.pcf.gz -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--14-130-75-75-c-70-jisx0201.1976-0

They are not bad, I still use mostly these fonts, as they are
available everywhere.

You can find more Japanese and other bitmap fonts at

    ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/intlfonts

You can get another useful collection of Japanese bitmap fonts from
the Vine distribution (http://vinelinux.org/), the rpm is called:

    XFree86-jpfonts-2.0-10.src.rpm

Among others, the Vine-rpm contains bold, italic and bold-italic
versions of the above mentioned Japanese fonts from the standard
X-distribution. This can be very useful sometimes.
