Wrong driver or misdetected hardware.  This happens when the driver can't read
the MAC address hardwired into the NIC -- in this case, it's obviously
accessing the wrong memory region.

If it's built into the box, it's most likely lurking on the PCI bus (thank God
for sane laptop manufacturers).

 /sbin/lspci -v (as root) would be extremely useful in determining exactly
what the hardware thinks it is ...
