tlug: compiler

In grappling with the tape drive issue, I tried to
install ftape on another linux machine to make tests.
However, something seems to be wrong with the compiler.
I found that not only couldn't I compile ftape, I couldn't
make a new kernel either. I tried make mrproper, tried
reinstalling the kernel-headers and kernel-source (from
rpm) and tried working from various .config files
that I had saved from previous kernel building experiments.
Something like the below error ocurred each time.
Perhaps something has happened to my compiler?

gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2
-fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -fno-strength-reduce -m486 -malign-loops=2
-malign-jumps=2 -malign-functions=2 -DCPU=586 -c -o tty_ioctl.o
tty_ioctl.c
