Do you really need us to answer that?  :-)

How about something like:

"Welcome to the TLUG mailing list.  Your aren't expected to know
everything about Linux before posting, and indeed, one of the reasons
the list exists is to help each other learn more about Linux and UNIX,
so if you are new to Linux, this is one place to find people who will
help you learn. 

In the UNIX world, part of learning is learning to help
yourself, which people will help you do in part by pointers to 
the documentation that tells you how to do what you want to do.
That can be harder at first, but it pays off later.

Many people new to Linux may be transitioning from an operating
system where self-help is not particularly encouraged, where 
you are more often expected to be quiet and do what the nice paper
clip tells you to do.  Things are a little different around here."
