tlug: Screen goes blank...

I had a running installation with recompiled kernel. But now suddenly it
behaves very strangely.
The screen goes blank after loading the boot image.
On pressing Ctl+alt+del it gives only one error i.e

"shutting down x-font server failed"

I am able to enter in single user mode.
What is the solution?
