Obviously; no _real_ Unix hacker would use a program option when he
could use a shell hack (and 20x as many extra keystrokes ;)

Lack of generality.  I don't do that kind of thing very often; I may
or may not have ever noticed that ncftp has that option.  Other ftp's
doesn't AFAIK.  Not to mention other programs; due to a DNS admin
snafu here (partly my own fault) I was doing

while ! host turnbull.sk.tsukuba.ac.jp hikari.tlug.gr.jp; do
 sleep 900;
done

yesterday to find out when it would be safe to send this mail....
