could be bad hardware, too.  I've had good luck with the rtl8139-based
cards.  I've got them in my masq firewall (2 of them) and they work great.
Have them in my other 2 x86 boxes as well.

Nice thing is, they're 10/100 PCI and they're $10.  www.ebccomputers.com.
