/var/spool/mail is the more traditional place for Linux.

The mailx implementation of mail (and many (most?) other mail user agents)
can take their path to a user's mailbox from the MAIL environment variable.
I like to deliver to home directories, so I have MAIL="$HOME/Mailbox" in my
/etc/profile for example.
