I believe your problem actually lies in KDE rather than X itself. I've 
seen several times number of virtual screens was reduced from 4 to 2 
(and desktop names lost as well) in KDE. Though I've ssen this only on 
Sparc RH5.2

X doesn't provide virtual desktops by itself. It's done by window 
manager (WM of KDE in your case).

To set it back to 4 open your KDE Control Center, go to Applications -> 
Panel -> Desktops . And set there prperty 'Visible' to number you like 
(from 2 to 8).
