Well, you could always stop writing your wife, but that would probably 
annoy her.  It sounds though, as if the encoding is different--is she using 
auto detect.

While this is a bit cumbersome, it may serve until someone more 
knowledegable gives you a solution.  There is a page where one can rescue 
Japanese email--you paste the mojibake into the appropiate box and it will 
often change it to something readable.
