Pine and Mutt.  Netscape would be last choice for mail, beating out only
a pencil and paper.  If you want a graphical one, there are any number
available (just search on Freshmeat).  KDE and Gnome both have them
(Gnome's is called Balsa; not sure about KDE's), although I don't know
the status (if any) of Japanese support.

Both Pine and Mutt have Japanese patches available, if you want to use
either of those.

That sounds like it's just a bug in Netscape, but you should probably
find it at least crashes less with Java and Javascript turned off.
